This politician from San Marino in the 1800s depicted with Garibaldi on a stamp issued by the San Marino Post Office Numismatic Philatelic Division
One of the postal issues this coming 19th of March will celebrate fellow citizen Domenico Maria Belzoppi, notary, politician and statesman of the 19th century, with the aim of highlighting his political and diplomatic integrity. Enrolled in the San Marino patriciate in 1842, Belzoppi held the office of Captain Regent five times (1838, 1842, 1845-46, 1849 and 1853). Right from his first six-month term in office, he outlined the lines of a policy that had its foundations in the strict safeguarding of the independence of the Republic and in granting the widest possible right of asylum to the Italian patriots of the Risorgimento. His name is linked to the episode that will go down in history as “the escapade of Garibaldi”.
The stamp by designer Cristian Ceccaroni is included in a mini-sheet of four in whose side band are the notary seal of Belzoppi and a QR code linked to additional content on his story.
