Six artworks by the artist from Bologna on a sheetlet to be issued on 19 March by the San Marino Post Office
Six values of € 1.25, six still lifes by Giorgio Morandi (Bologna 1890-1964), an artist who holds a prominent position in the scene of 20th century Italian painting. After an early encounter with Italian Futurism and an initial interest in metaphysical painting, Morandi embarked on a very personal artistic quest, exploring in depth the apparently obsolete genre of still life. Until the end of his life, he gave life and beauty to inanimate objects, in a style that defied all attempts at classification and that was so refined, skilful and varied that it was widely appreciated by critics and the Italian and international market. Sixty years after his death, the Philatelic and Numismatic Division of the San Marino Post Office gathers on a sheet six “still lifes” created by the artist between 1936 and 1962, which will be issued in 30,000 copies.
