The UN General Assembly has declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. The concept of sustainable tourism refers to a way of travelling that respects the planet, does not alter the environment - natural, social and artistic - and does not hinder the development of other social and economic activities.
This is a type of tourism that is the opposite of mass tourism, with low environmental impact and aimed at benefiting weaker economies. The Republic dedicates to the Year of Sustainable Tourism a commemorative coin of 2 euro, designed by the Canadian artist Andrew Lewis, to promote a new mentality and encourage respect for the environment by tourists.
