The Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy began on 8 December 2015, on the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception with the opening of the Holy Door, a date on which the 50th anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council will be celebrated and will end on 20 November 2016. It is therefore a historic anniversary for the Church, called to bring the Gospel of mercy especially to those who are in suffering, alone and abandoned, without hope of being forgiven and feeling loved by the Father. The 10 euro gold coin dedicated to the jubilee year shows a woman offering food and drink to a needy, thus performing two works of corporal mercy: "feeding the hungry" and "giving water to the thirsty".
