The stamp commemorates Saint Maximilian Maria Kolbe, a Franciscan friar, priest and Polish missionary. In 1915, he was a guest of the Franciscan Convent of San Marino. Arrested by the Nazis, he died in the Auschwitz concentration camp, donating his life to save a family father. In 1982, Pope John Paul II canonized him as a martyr.
