In 2008, the United Nations General Assembly has declared the 8 of June World Oceans Day, in order to promote sustainable behaviour and policies for the marine resources of the planet. The oceans cover about two-thirds of the Earth’s surface and they are the very basis of life. The 5 Euro coin shows on the reverse side a dolphin diving in the water: the composition reveals the devastating impact of man who with his waste pollutes the waters of the seas and poisons the creatures that live there. On the obverse side of the coin, water and its waves lightly touch the Three Towers and recall the volutes of the Feathers, to symbolize the essentiality of the water element for the ecosystem and for human beings.
